Shepherds Pizza Pie

This shepherds pizza pie addresses the very widely know issue of how to bridge Italian and Irish cuisine. Call Stanford.

This shepherds pizza pie recipe is my re-imagining of the classic Irish dish, shepherds pie. The crust is a seasoned potato cake topped with all of your classic shepherds pie ingredients that will send you back again and again for another “slice”. It’s hearty, it’s Irish, it’s Italian, it’s confused, and oh so good. It’ll have you asking “Oi, what’s amatta you?”. The answer is: nothing. I love fusion, and it works.

I will say that using a pizza stone was a terrible mistake. This recipe should have been done with a nice big greased cookie sheet, which one day I might go back and repost properly. For now I’ll just say you should monitor your potato cake, to get the right crisp and consistency, before moving ahead with the toppings. It’ll work out just fine, and the flavor is amazing. Enjoy!

Shepherds Pizza Pie Recipe

Serves 4

Prep Time: 5 mins  |  Cook Time: 45 mins  |  Total Time: 50 mins

  • 8 Oz Instant Mashed Potatoes
  • 1 Lbs Ground Beef
  • 1/2 Onion, Minced
  • 1 10.75 Oz Can Cream of Mushroom
  • 1/2 Cup Frozen Peas & Carrots
  • 2 1/2 Cups Shredded Cheddar Cheese
  • 1/2 Cup Flour
  • 2 Eggs, Beaten
  • 1/2 Cup Panko Bread Crumbs
  • 2 Sprigs Green Onion, Thinly Sliced
  • 1/2 Tbsp Garlic Salt
  • 1/2 Tbsp Black Pepper
  • Salt & Pepper To Taste

Step 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 2. Boil 4 cups of water and add instant mashed potatoes to the boiled water. Stir with a fork and set aside.

Step 3. Add onion and ground beef to a pan and begin to brown the ground beef and caramelize the onions for 10 minutes. Add the peas and carrots and cook for an addition 3 to 5 minutes. Add the cream of mushroom and salt and pepper to taste.

Step 4. Add flour, eggs, garlic salt, and black pepper to the mashed potatoes and combine thoroughly. Grease your cookie sheet and begin spreading the mixture in an even circle on the sheet. Top the potato cake mixture with the panko bread crumbs and bake for 10-15 minutes, or until your bread crumbs begin to brown and the potato cake begins to firm.

Step 5. Remove the potato cake from the oven and top with the ground beef mixture, cheddar cheese, and green onions to within one inch of the edge of the potato cake. Bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until your cheese is bubbly and the crust is nicely browned.
